Make 2010 Your Best Year Yet
Welcome to a new decade! If you are the owner of a delivery/courier service business (or are thinking about starting one) the beginning of a new decade is a great opportunity to review and reflect upon the preceding 10 years, and a chance to contemplate what you want to accomplish during the next 10 years.
Your future is determined by the decisions and the actions you make today.
Indeed, where you are today is the result of everything you have thought and every action you have made in your entire life. Were those thoughts and actions based on a conscious choice to focus and act upon your goals, or based on reacting to whatever problem presented itself next?
To live consciously, we must know what we want, set goals to achieve those desires, create a plan to get there, and identify deadlines for our achievements. Goal setting is a powerful tool to help us hone in on our true desires and keep our mind focused on what we want.
To be effective, our goals must affect us on an emotional level. All organisms are motivated by two simple but extrememly powerful forces: the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. Take advantage of these intrinsic motivators to help you stay dedicated to the achievement of your dreams. Either will work, so pick the one that works best for you.
When I wanted to start my own courier service, my main motivator wasn’t to make lots of money (which would be a pursuit of pleasure). My motivation was the avoidance of pain. I never wanted to work for anybody else again. I never again wanted to be stuck inside in an office, staring into a computer monitor with a telephone glued to my head.
The thought of returning to the 9-to-5 grind in an unrewarding and soul-crushing environment was so painful to think about that I was determined to make my new business succeed no matter what! Failure simply was not an option.
Without a powerful motivating goal, we simply will not have the passion, dedication or determination to stay on the difficult path we have chosen. There are always obstacles and setbacks in the pusuit of our dreams, but these should be seen as stepping stones and not as signs that we are on the wrong path.
Determine what you really want out of life, and let that be the motivation that drives your actions.
There are some great books on goal setting out there, two I highly recommend are Brian Tracy’s “Ultimate Goals Program” and “Think and Grow Rich,” the classic by Napoleon Hill. “Think and Grow Rich” has great guidance on determining what Hill calls your “definite major purpose.” A focused human mind is one of the most powerful forces on earth. Focus in on your goals, live consciously, and make the 2010 your best year ever!
